Web traffic generation is a hot topic these days. There are countless methods being recommended to increase traffic. Some are useless junk and some actually work as promised.
After running an online business for five years, I've tried out just about all of these traffic getting systems. I'll save you some time and mention a few that you'll want to avoid and some that will actually bring you some good web traffic.
Tactics That Don't Work:
Free for all sites: These don't work because no one is really reading your offer. The other submitters are like you, and just want to promote there offer. The only people going to these sites is people selling something. Think about it. How many times have you gone to one of these sites to shop.
Spamming With Email. Big mistake. Don't do it. You can get yourself in trouble with your web hosting provider and your ISP. It's annoying and illegal. You can get a big fine if you get caught. No one wants to get junk mail and they sure won't buy from those sending it to them.
Junk Website Creating Software: Let's face it. If it was as easy as clicking a button and having a great website that pulled in hordes of traffic, everyone would be doing it. Don't waste your money.
Buying A Magic Money Making System. Money doesn't just fall from the sky. It's not as easy as some people pretend it is. Don't buy every money making system that hits the market.
Worthwhile Tactics:
PPC (pay per click): While a great method of receiving target traffic, it's also very expensive. Who can afford to spend $400 to make $300? Not recommended for beginners.
Social Site Marketing: This method can work but takes a lot of time to implement. First you have to sign up to digg or reddit or another social network and then you have to post on a regular basis so as not to look like a spammer.
If you would like to try a social network, Squiddo or Hubpages work well. These are high traffic websites and you may pick up some extra visitors. Don't just slap up any junk though. Spend some time and make a good page.

Submitting Articles: This is my favorite traffic generating method. You not only get direct traffic from the article directories, but you also get a lot of highly targeted one-way backlinks.
Write a quality article. Don't just spin some PLR articles with a one click spinner. You'll just get junk. You want to have a good article or the directories won't publish it. Take your article and submit it to the top 10 article websites. Write another article and repeat.
Don't just submit to only the major article directories. Try and find some related niche article directories. If you have a health website, then submit to some health article directories.
Write and submit at least one to three articles per week. This will pay off in the long run and get you lots of quality backlinks and traffic. - 33376
